Con Sabor Playlist 2/27/2021 Johnny Pacheco Tribute – KPFA Fund Drive Program

This week, Con Sabor had a special KPFA Fund Drive program which featured a musical tribute to the late, great Johnny Pacheco (pictured left) who died of pneumonia at 85 on February 15, 2021. Pacheco, born in the Dominican Republic was a Music icon, visionary, trendsetter, co-founder of the famed Fania Records label, creator of The Fania All Stars and given credit for coining the term “Salsa” that denotes the genre. Besides his many accomplishments as a flautist and percussionist, producer, composer, arranger, and talent scout, Pacheco launched the careers of countless stars in Latin Music on his label. He was given the lifetime achievement award from the Latin Recording Academy in 2005. I featured Pacheco’s music with other selections in the first hour and spotlighted Pacheco’s solo work along with his collaborations with Celia Cruz, Hector Lavoe and the Fania All Stars in the second hour of this exciting fund drive program.
