This week, I had the pleasure of interviewing Cuban percussion phenom Calixto Oviedo and his wife, vocalist Lily Hernandez on the program. Calixto who was the drummer/percussionist for Timba legends NG La Banda and has enjoyed a fine solo career in Europe and the US shared his new recording “Latin Funk” which features Hernandez. They will be each coming out with new recordings early in the coming year. I also gave a Six at 6 pm segment tribute to Fania All Star bassist and Salsa great Bobby Valentin.

The first hour was dedicated to the Charanga. On this part 1, the emphasis was on the classic Charanga music from Cuba: Arcaño y Sus Maravillas, Aragon, Enrique Jorrin, Belisario Lopez, Sensacion with Abelardo Barroso were among other greats that were featured. There are new live music scenes opening back up that are allowing Salsa couple dancing in the age of COVID 19. A few dining places in the San Francisco Bay Area and Northern California have allowed DJ’s to spin Latin dance music and have opened up a dance floor at their establishments.
