Con Sabor had a special KPFA Fund Drive program which featured a musical tribute to the late, great Johnny Pacheco (pictured left) who died of pneumonia at 85 on February 15, 2021. Pacheco, born in the Dominican Republic was a Music icon, visionary, trendsetter, co-founder of the famed Fania Records label, creator of The Fania All Stars and given credit for coining the term “Salsa” that denotes the genre. Besides his many accomplishments as a flautist and percussionist, producer, composer, arranger, and talent scout, Pacheco launched the careers of countless stars in Latin Music on his label.

This week, the Six at 6 pm tribute segment saluted the fine music of esteemed Cuban vocalist Issac Delgado “El Chevere De La Salsa!”. During the first hour, Sabiduria Con Tumbao featured the music of the new Cuban divas both singers and musicians. The spotlight was put on percussionist/vocalist Brenda Navarette, woodwind master Jane Bunnett and her all female band of young lionesses, Maqueque, vocalist Dayme Arocena, violinist/vocalist Yillian Canizares and Grammy award winning vocalist Aymee Nuviola captured live with piano phenom Gonzalo Rubalcaba.

I got the news on Monday, February 15th that we lost a giant in Latin Music. Johnny Pacheco (born Juan Pablo Pacheco Knipping) died on Feb. 15th at the age of 85. Pacheco, the brilliant musician, producer, composer, arranger, bandleader, co-founder of Fania Records and the creator of the worldwide sensation The Fania All Stars influenced generations of Salsa and Latin Music musicians. We celebrated the music of Johnny Pacheco with a Sabiduria Con Tumbao tribute on WorldSalsaRadio.com on Wednesday, Feb. 17.
