This week, Sabiduria Con Tumbao gave a salute to Salsa music’s “El Diferente”..Angel Canales. Canales’s own brew of jazz infused Salsa filled with driving rhythms, sophisticated arrangements and long solos locked within swinging melodies with killer hooks. Canales had a mystique with his exotic looks and nasal sounding voice that fascinated audiences yet he achieved bigger success outside of the U.S. especially in Latin America. The Six at 6 pm focused on great all star collaborations between international Salsa and Latin Jazz musicians and Cuban vocalists.

Today, I had the pleasure of interviewing all-star conguero/percussionist Little Johnny Rivero a.k.a. Pequeño Johnny who has been part of the Eddie Palmieri Orchestra for the past 20 years. He is also known for his 16 year stint with the iconic Puerto Rican music institution La Sonora Ponceña. We discussed his new recording “Golpe Duro”, his musical influences, his playing style and his history. The Six at 6 pm gave tribute to “El Niño Bonito” of Salsa…Ismael Miranda.
