This week, Sabiduria Con Tumbao gave a salute to Salsa music’s “El Diferente”..Angel Canales. Canales’s own brew of jazz infused Salsa filled with driving rhythms, sophisticated arrangements and long solos locked within swinging melodies with killer hooks. Canales had a mystique with his exotic looks and nasal sounding voice that fascinated audiences yet he achieved bigger success outside of the U.S. especially in Latin America. The Six at 6 pm focused on great all star collaborations between international Salsa and Latin Jazz musicians and Cuban vocalists.

This week’s Sabiduria Con Tumbao featured Salsa Flamenca…the collaboration between Spanish Flamenco vocalists and Salsa artists from Colombia, Cuba, Panama and Venezuela. San Francisco Bay Area’s own Latin Music Renaissance man John Santos was my special guest in the first hour of Con Sabor this week. We had a great conversation talking about his latest recording with his sextet Art Of The Descarga on Smithsonian Folkways, his life dealing with the pandemic, his thoughts on how the public can support musicians and artists, his memories about his close friend, late Santana conguero Raul Rekow and his thoughts about the passing of conga legend Candido Camero.

I gave a salute to the late Dueño Del Soneo, Cano Estremera. I played two of Cano’s big hits with Bobby Valentin to remember his soneos and artistry. also played new releases by Little Johnny Rivero aka Pequeño Johnny, Fernando Quiroz with Venezuelan sonero Marcial Istruiz, El Niño Y La Verdad, Roberton and Lele of Los Van Van giving tribute to Adalberto Alvarez, Manolito Y Su Trabuco and trombonist extraordinare Conrad Herwig saluting Horace Silver.
