On this past Saturday’s Con Sabor program, I featured an interview with Jessy Diaz, a rising star from Matanzas, Cuba now based in Miami. Jessy (pictured left-photo: Luis Medina) is a powerhouse vocalist and dynamic performer who gave a number of electrifying performances in the SF Bay Area in a variety of diverse settings that showcased her versatility such as a Valentine’s Day concert featuring a repertoire of Jazz and Ballads with her sublime trio, a duet with Grammy Award winning Spanish Harlem Orchestra’s pianist and bandleader Oscar Hernandez, the renowned percussionist and bandleader Christian Pepin led the Montuno Productions All Stars Big Band mambo tribute to the legendary music wunderkind Mario Bauzá, the musical director for Machito and his Afro-Cubans.
I highly recommend that you check out her latest album “Diosa Y Fe” on producer Luis Mendoza’s Montuno Productions label that pays tribute to her inspiration: the great Celia Cruz with La Sonora Matancera. Tracks such “Yemaya”, “Buho Kende” and “Nuevo Ritmo Omelenko“. Great selections on this exceptional renditions of these Celia tunes that showcase Diaz’ phenomenal voice.
