Latin Jazz legend Pete Escovedo’s Retirement Tour hits Berkeley’s Freight and Salvage this coming Friday and Saturday, July 7th and 8th at 8 pm. Pete (pictured right-Photo: Luis Medina) is traveling with his Latin Jazz Orchestra accompanied by his sons, Peter Michael and Juan Escovedo who are first call percussionists in their own right.  These shows are being presented as part of the popular John Santos curated Raices series at the Freight. The venue will also host the Son Con Son concert on Sunday, July 9th combining the music of Son Jarocho and Son Cubano.  The star studded bill will feature Los Cenzontles, Grupo Mono Blanco from Veracruz, Mexico and renowned trescero Kiki Valera of the famed Grupo Familia Valera from Santiago, Cuba who is now residing in the Seattle area. Latin Salsa/RnB legend Joe Bataan will be making a rare Bay Area appearance at the Yerba Buena Gardens Festival on Saturday, July 15 from 1 to 3 pm. Rising Bay Area favorite La Doña will be opening the show. Bataan who rose during the boogaloo era and recorded a number of huge Salsa and RnB hits for the Fania and later Salsoul labels in the 1960’s and 1970’s such as “I Wish You Love”, “When Sunny Gets Blue”, “Afro-Filipino” and countless others. Coming up this week: Yoshi’s at Jack London Square in Oakland will be presenting hot danceable Salsa from two of the SF/Northern California’s popular Salsa orchestras this coming Saturday, July 8th. Orquesta Taino will perform starting at 7:30 pm. Taino is a swinging band led by Orquesta Borinquen’s timbalero/vocalist Aaron Routtenberg. The 9:30 pm headlining slot will be featuring The Latin Rhythm Boys led by brothers Henry and Earl Miranda and who features a mighty 3 trombone horn section led by vocalist/trombonist RicMighty Bone” Feliciano. The Latin Rhythm Boys are an exciting band to watch and a dancer’s delight!

Today-Sunday 7/2: Julio Bravo y Salsabor is back at the Seahorse in Sausalito at 4 pm. KPOO/KPFA DJ Jose Ruiz will be the DJ.…..Jaffe Events presents another Salsa By The Bay happening starting at 2 pm with Andy Y Su Callao plus DJ’S until 8 pm. Rasa Vitalia gives dance lessons. The place is Building 43 Winery at 2440 Monarch Street, Alameda….Popular Timba DJ supreme Walt Digz celebrates his birthday with an outdoor party “Veranka Timbero” at the For The People outdoor space at 701 Clay Street in Oakland from 4 to 8 pm. Feliz Cumple Walt…y mucho mas amigo!…My South Bay Peeps….Salson will headline Domingo Sabroso at the popular Sunday San Jose hot spot Mama Kin, 374 South 1st St. starting at 5 pm. Robert Santana will give dance lessons at 5 pm. DJ Candela will be spinning the sounds….and if that wasn’t enough the All Day Fillmore Jazz Festival is happening in the San Francisco Fillmore district until 6 pm. The second day of this free festival features powerhouse vocalist Kim Nalley, grammy award winning pianist Tammy Hall, the Sylvia Cuenca Group, Zeparrella and others.
