New Live Music Happenings Opening Up in SF/North Cali

Pacific Mambo Orchestra will play their first live date on Friday, June 11th in. St. Helena at the Charles Krug Winery. PMO will performs two shows at 5:30 pm and 8:30 pm. The group started last year with a bang with the release of their explosive 2020 recording “The III Side“. However, they suffered a few setbacks from the live music business shutdown due to COVID 19 and weren’t able to promote the recording and perform live until now. Their European date at Tempo Latino in France scheduled for late July has been postponed until next year. This exciting 20 member strong orchestra is led by pianist Christian Tumalan and trumpeter Steffen Kuehn. They have 3 full length recordings and a single under the belts. May 29th with Alberto Y La Diferencia providing the live music.

SF Jazz Festival produced by SF JAZZ is a virtual affair featuring past festival performances this year from June 4th to the 25th. Performances include a tribute to Ernesto Lucuona starring Chucho Valdes, Michel Camilo and Gonzalo Rubalcaba, saxophonist Melissa Aldana, Brian Blade and the Friendship Band, Jazzmeia Horn, activist and educator Angela Davis with bassist Marcus Shelby and a special performance “Live From Havana” with pianist Harold Lopez-Nussa. Carnaval San Francisco has branched out and created a food hub under the direction of Carnaval chief Roberto Y. Hernandez and his team. The Food Hub has been able to distribute food to community residents during COVID and is still a vital resource. The annual Carnaval event has been scaled down due to COVID restrictions to a 2 day Resource Fair and Celebration this coming Sat. May 29 and Sunday, May 30 from 12 Noon to 5 pm on Harrison between 18th and 20th Streets.

There will also be two stages of entertainment including an 18th Street DJ Zone featuring Sazon Libre DJ’s, Nenas Del Perro ,Tropic Soul and Francisco Herrera. The Health and Wellness Pavilion Stage features La Doña, the Latin Jazz Youth Ensemble, Susanna and Orquesta Adelante, Monica Fimbrez, Ke The Spirit, Fogo Na Roupa, Loco Loco, Tru People, Tonalli, Sol Patrol, Batuci and others. Live Music and Dancing: The Ramp in San Francisco has reopened their Salsa Saturdays featuring bands such as Alberto Y La Diferencia and others.

Rocky’s Market at Brooklyn Basin in Oakland is featuring the revamped Salsa Caliente featuring Santana percussionist Karl Perazo this coming Sunday, May 30th from 6 to 8 pm. Pellejo Seco featuring Sulkary Valverde will be bringing their Cuban sounds as part of El Chanchullo Cubano event at Rocky’s the following Sunday. Advance tickets at eventbrite.com. This expansive outdoor venue as most venues does have restrictions including buying advance tickets or pay in cash, masks and social distancing for dancers. Check with each venue for information on restrictions and policy.

The Seahorse is Sausalito have ramped up their live music bookings while DJ’s Jose Ruiz is featured on Saturdays and DJ El Griego holds down Sundays. DJ El De La Clave will be featured this Sat, May 29th. Live music returns with Orquesta Bembe with Christian Pepin on the 30th, Edgardo Cambon and LaTiDo on the 13th and Louie Romero’s Mazacote on the 20th.

Jaffe Events have been producing Salsa By The Bay events at District Six, the former outdoor SoMa Market spot featuring the Josh Jones Salsa Band and popular SF DJ Tony O. Jaffe is also producing Cubania Total events featuring DJ Leydis De Cuba and DJ Antonio spinning Cuban favorites. The venue for the June 19th night edition of this party has moved to Oakland’s The New Parish nightspot which has also reopened.
