New Music Reviews and News 4/1/2023

I’m back after taking care a short hiatus to take care of personal business! Here are a few new Latin releases that have recently come out that would be worth your time to check out! First, another phenomenal release by pianist/composer/arranger Pedro Bermudez entitled “La Revelación”. it’s a scorcher of a recording that you may have a hard time taking off of your media player. Bermudez’s last recording “Arrasando” made my top 20 list when it came out a while back. This follow up features great arrangements, catchy tunes and appearances by guest stars like sonero Luisito Carrion that makes this a must have!

Master percussionist Giovanni Hidalgo had the distinction of performing with the late Latin Music icon Tito Puente back in the 1990’s with The Golden Latin Jazz All Stars for the RMM label. On “Tribute To The King”, his gem of a new recording, Hidalgo honors his former bandleader. Hidalgo took the less obvious songs that others borrow from the Puente catalog and reinvented them with fresh arrangements while maintaining the classic Puente sound. Tracks like “Mambozooka”, “Caonao” and “4 Beat Cha Cha” are simply killer! Hidalgo is in excellent form with his masterful playing and directing this all star ensemble in the exciting, heartfelt tribute to El Rey!

Look out for new music from the renowned pianist, composer, producer and now S.F. Bay Area resident Israel Tanenbaum entitled “Impressions” coming out in late April. Tanenbaum, a renowned producer who has worked with Guayacan, Sonora Ponceña and other heavyweights did travel to various parts of the world to collaborate with all star musicians featured on his new work! Can’t wait to hear it!! …..Tromboranga from Barcelona and their new release “Salsa Con Golpe” is out now on all digital platforms. Tromboranga is a powerful band with an incendiary trombone sound led by timbalero/percussionist Joaquin Arteaga. Their music grabs your attention with irresistible tunes full of impeccable musicianship that will fire you up! This new release promises to be their best yet. They have an impressive catalog of fine recordings including “Salsaterapia” which was released during the pandemic. They have recently toured the U.S. to rave reviews. A review is coming up shortly.
