Sabiduria Con Tumbao covered a lot of ground tonight from honoring the late lead trumpet giant Victor Paz aka Vitin. I also paid a Six at 6 pm salute to the five plus decades of the Puerto Rico All Stars featuring selections from each of their recordings. As a bonus, I included the 1963 recording of famed timbalero Kako along with the Puerto Rican All Stars on Alegre Records featuring members of El Gran Combo.
In regards to Paz, he passed at the age of 89 on April 3. Paz “was known for his technical virtuosity, soaring timbre and uncannily precise time feel, Victor Paz was the most sought after lead trumpeter of his time” per radio host/musician Bobby Sanabria. Paz played with Eddie Palmieri, Machito, Mario Bauza, Tito Puente, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and countless others. Here is the playlist:
