Spanish Harlem Orchestra (pictured left @ Yoshi’s 10/11/21. Photo-Luis Medina) visited Yoshi’s Jazz Club in Oakland this past weekend. The result was an immediate smash: 3 sold out shows and the final 9 pm show on Sunday was closed to being sold out as well. The band sounded amazing as they performed selections from their recent recordings as well as debuting selections from their forthcoming March 2022 release. SHO are simply one of the exciting touring bands to see, listen and dance. Northern California audiences will have another opportunity to see the band in action this coming December on the 11th at the Monterey Conference Center in Monterey. I will also be the MC and the DJ for this special event. For more information on this holiday dance/concert, visit montunoproductions.com.

Rocky’s Market at Brooklyn Basin will soon end their outdoor music concert season for this year. Scheduled are Rumbache, this Friday, Oct 22, 6 pm for all the timba aficionados. The Modupue Sundays curated by percussionist Javier Navareette will end for 2021 with a Halloween bash on Sunday, October 31, 5 to 7:30 pm with Javier Navarette and his Socially Distanced Friends with vocalist/percussionist Hector Lugo, violinist Anthony Blea, vocalist Christelle Durandy, guitarist Kai Lyons, Pedro Pastrana on cuatro, percussionist Jesse Weber and saxophonist Charlie Gerke. Music to look out for: Cuban piano phenom Harold Lopez-Nussa will be making his Bay Area return on Thursday, October 28, 8 pm at Berkeley’s Freight and Salvage. He will be accompanied by his brother Ruy Adrian Lopez-Nussa on drums, Loques Curtis on bass and Gregoire Maret on harmonica player for this date. Lopez-Nussa has been releasing intoxicating and provocative recordings for Mack Avenue such as his last recording “Te Lo Dije” (I Told You So)”. On “Te Lo Dije“, Lopez-Nussa mixes his style of Afro-Cuban Jazz with Cuban popular music from honoring his heroes, Los Van Van to weaving Reggaeton on a daring piece entitled “JazzTon“. He is a gifted player who cleverly combines his adventurous musical curiosity with his stunning virtuosity. For more information, visit www.thefreight.com.

Scenes: DJ Walt Digz has moved his popular “El Timbon” Wednesday nights to the Slate Bar, 2925 16th Street near South Van Ness in San Francisco. He is also broadcasting his livestream El Timbon webcasts on Twitch.com on Tuesday nights from 7 to 10 PM where you can check out the latest in Timba and Cuban dance music.

More to come next time. Hasta La Proxima!!!
