WorldSalsaRadio.com is happening now!!

A new internet Salsa radio station is going to launching today! WorldSalsaRadio.com will launch with a wide array of knowledgable dj’s, musicians and ethnomusicologists from around the world including Willie Colon/Fania legend Louie “Timbalito” Romero, Colombia’s Luis Felipe Valero “DJ El Chino”, KPOO/KPFA mixologist Jose A. Ruiz and yours truly, Luis Medina in the programming mix. I’m excited to be hosting a new tprogram “Sabiduria Con Tumbao” on Wednesdays from 5 to 7 pm Pacific Time. This is addition to hosting my regular weekly program “Con Sabor” on Saturday evenings on KPFA.

The core team for this exciting new radio venture is made up of SF based internet radio host/international Salsa congress DJ Felipe Martinez “El De La Clave”, internet radio’s Sabor Boricua and Jelly’s/Cafe Cocomo club DJ Ivette Fuentes “La Coqui” and SF Bay Area Salsa Congress and the famed Hot Salsa Saturday social DJ Orlando Felix “DJ Boricua“.

I caught up with Felipe Martinez who explained to me that the focus of the station is to educate listeners on the rich culture, history and artist backgrounds and to showcase the very best in Afro-Latin music. Martinez previously created another short lived internet radio station with a different partner that included Fuentes and Felix as DJ personalities. Martinez recently left the station due to artistic and creative differences. Martinez teamed up with Fuentes and Felix to create WorldSalsaRadio.com as a site where “people can come and learn, listen to good music (not the same 20-30 songs that you hear on commercial radio), get exposed to films and books on Salsa, Mambo and other forms of Afro-Latin music”. Martinez interest in radio started in his native Colombia where he was a rock DJ at his high school radio station. He later moved to the San Francisco Bay Area where he started as a dancer in Gabriel “Mambo” Romero’s salsa dance troupe and later started his journey as a club dj under the mentorship of Fred “DJ Fab Fred” Flores. He gained fame as a DJ in clubs and as part of the international Salsa Congress circuit. Fuentes and Felix are also veterans of the clubs and the Salsa Congress scene. They have put together a crew of savvy club and radio dj’s to launch their new venture starting today. To listen and for more information, visit www.WorldSalsaRadio.com
