Roberto Roena Señor Bongo & Fania All Star RIP
Roberto Roena, legendary percussionist, bandleader, showman, dancer and member of the Fania All Stars died on September 23rd due to a heart attack at the age of 81. Roena was one of the original members of El Gran Combo. He later became the leader of his own band “Roberto Roena Y Su Apollo Sound” who were very popular and considered one of the finest Salsa bands in Puerto Rico. Roena was a long time member of the Fania All Stars, the Salsa supergroup that enjoyed massive worldwide success since the 1970’s.

One of the SF Bay Area Salsa scene’s colorful personalities Jimmy Arhon, DJ Griego passed away in his sleep on Friday, Aug. 27. He was 70. Arhon at the time of his sudden passing was DJing Sunday evenings at the Seahorse in Sausalito and had resumed his long time role as manager for SF Bay Area favorites Julio Bravo Y Salsabor.

Master Timbalero Ralph Irrizary passed away on Sunday, September 5th. He died due to complications caused by a degenerative muscular disease. He was 67. Irrizary was a Grammy award winning percussionist, bandleader and studio musician who has played on jingles, film and television scores and who was known for his fluid, distinctive playing style has made an indelible mark on those artists with whom he has performed.
