It’s been a while since I’ve chatted with John Santos who is celebrating his new recording “Horizontes” by John Santos Sextet and Friends on his Machete label which is also celebrating its 40th Anniversary. There will be a celebration this coming Saturday, February 1st, 8 pm at the Freight and Salvage, 2020 Addison Street in Berkeley. Joining Sextet members, Dr. John Calloway, Marco Diaz, Saul Sierra, David Flores, Charlie Gurke and Santos will be special guests Christelle Durandy, Juan Luis Perez, Pedro Pastrana, all-star timbalero Orestes Vilato, Anthony Blea and Javier Navarette. We talked about a wide range of topics including the social and political nature of Santos music and highlights of his musical career. The interview is available at kpfa.org/archives. Go to Saturday, January 18, 2025 and go to Con Sabor for that date starting at 9 pm.
