Edgardo Cambon (pictured left) and Candela will be presenting a special Noche Original tonight at the Freight and Salvage, 2020 Addison Street in Berkeley starting at 7pm with dance lessons by Rueda Con Ritmo. Cambon and band will start at 8 pm. Cambon who is the figurehead of the groups Candela and LaTiDo, is a well respected vocalist, percussionist, composer, arranger, bandleader and educator in the SF Bay Area/Northern California area since 1986. Originally from Uruguay, Cambon has recently recorded a single “Amores Como Este” produced by Israel Tanenbaum for Latinbaum Records which incorporates the Uruguayan Candombe drums into Cambon’s swinging salsa sound. Tonight’s concert, Cambon will feature the Timomo percussion ensemble that will play the Candombe drums along with his 12 piece all-star band. Tanenbaum will be on hand along with all-stars such as pianist/trumpeter Marco Diaz, bassist Saul Sierra, saxophonist Charlie Gurke, flautist Miguelito Martinez, percussionist/vocalist Omar Ledesma, trombonist Jaime Dubberly and others. The Cesar Chavez Festival will take place tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, April 29th from 12 Noon to 5 pm at 24th and Byrant Streets in the San Francisco Mission District. This free event will follow the Cesar Chavez Parade will starts at 11 am from Dolores Park. The lineup for the Cesar Chavez Festival will feature Latin Rock legend Abel Sanchez and the Song For Cesar band featuring all-star timbalero Leo Rosales from Momotombo SF, Gary Flores and Salsa Caliente, The Cabanijazz Project directed by Grammy Award winner Javier Cabanillas, Los Cenzontles, Danza Azteca and yours truly, Luis Medina from KPFA and WorldSalsaRadio.com will be your MC and DJ for the afternoon. Get ready to honor the legacy of Cesar Chavez and the United Farmworkers Union on this special day with this celebration of community and music! Finally, San Francisco will get a visit from one of the greatest exponents of Cuban music, Orquesta Aragon “La Charanga Eternal” with their “Icono” tour this Sunday, April 30th at the Brava Theater! The venue located at 2781 24th Street at York in San Francisco’s Mission District be the site of two shows at 5:30 pm and 8 pm. The shows are make-ups for the postponed April 7th date. Tickets that were bought for the original date will be honored at the door. Aragon, now entering its 84th year of existence is led by violinist Rafael Lay Jr., the son of one of the original members of the famed orquesta. The orquesta has had a huge slew of hits and influential records throughout its long star-studded career! Their last recording “Icono” celebrated their 80th birthday but their sound keeps evolving tastefully incorporating timba and other contemporary trends. It has been quite a while since Aragon’s last appearance in the SF Bay Area. I have the honor of being the MC for these two Aragon shows tomorrow night.
